The Nitty-Gritty Hardware
Depending on where you live, you’re looking at a 110V or 220V circuit. The smart controller just sits in the middle, acting as the gatekeeper between your power source and the heater. One quick tip: don’t cheap out on the relays. Use heavy-duty ones so the contacts don’t weld themselves shut. And if you want to be able to dim the heat—rather than just having it be “full blast” or “off”—you’ll need a TRIAC-based dimmer that can handle the heavy lifting.
The “Gotchas”
It’s not all plug-and-play. There are a few things that can trip you up. First, there’s the “ghost” power. Your IoT modules use a bit of electricity even when they’re idling. Plus, if your house has a lot of metal framing, your signal might get a bit wonky. But the biggest headache?Sensor placement. Here’s the thing: if you put your temperature sensor too close to the heater, it’ll feel the “heat bloom” immediately. The system will think the room is a sauna and shut off before you’ve even stopped shivering. You have to place the sensor further away, where you’ll actually be sitting, so the system knows when you’re actually comfortable.
