
Stop Guessing With Your Glass Heating
Buying a medium wave infrared lamp based on a datasheet is basically a gamble. I see it all the time. Someone picks a lamp based on voltage and wattage, pops it into their old fixture, and then spends the next week wondering why the glass is cracking or why the heat just isn’t hitting the core. Here’s the thing: the numbers on the page don’t tell the whole story.
Getting the heat where it actually belongs
Medium wave IR is special because it plays well with the way glass absorbs energy. Think of it this way: shortwave lamps hit the surface like a hammer—fast and hard. That often leads to “skinning,” where the outside of your glass is scorching but the center is still ice cold. Not great. We tune the filament and the quartz envelope so the energy actually sinks into the material. It’s about making sure the heat stays in the glass instead of just bouncing off the surface and wasting your electricity.
The trade-off between power and hardware
When you go for those high-wattage tubes, you’re dealing with intense heat density. Sure, a high-voltage setup lets you keep things compact. But that puts a massive amount of stress on your reflectors. If those reflectors are a bit oxidized or just slightly out of alignment, you’re throwing away about 30% of your energy into the empty air. Plus, you have to make sure your wiring can actually handle the current. If not, your terminals start overheating, and then you’ve got a real problem on your hands. It’s a delicate balance between how much power you want and what your equipment can actually take.
Why we come to you
A lamp is just a part. It’s not the whole system. The distance to the glass, the angle of the reflector, the way the air moves around the piece—all of that matters. A “standard” lamp almost always struggles in a non-standard environment. That’s why we prefer to do thermal diagnostics on-site. We show up with IR cameras and look for those annoying cold spots and weird thermal gradients. Maybe you need a different lamp length. Maybe the emitter just needs to be shifted a few inches. We aren’t interested in just selling you a replacement tube and walking away. We want to actually fix how your heat is distributed so you can stop worrying about broken glass.
