If you’re looking at infrared lamps for the bathroom, the first thing you’ll see is the “IPX5 rating.” Basically, that’s just a fancy way of saying the unit won’t fry itself when it gets splashed. It’s the bare minimum. But here is the part where most people mess up: picking the wattage. If you get it wrong, you’re either shivering in a damp room or paying for electricity you don’t actually feel. Picking your power Think of it in terms of the room size. For those tiny powder rooms—the ones where you can almost touch both walls at once—a 250W to 400W lamp is plenty. It warms the space up instantly. You don’t need more than that, or you’ll turn the room into a sauna. Medium bathrooms (around 4m² to 8m²) need a bit more punch. Go for 600W or 800W. If you go too low here, the lamp just runs and runs. It never hits that “perfect” temp, which wears out the bulb faster and makes your electric bill jump. Then you’ve got the big master baths. For those, one lamp usually isn’t enough. You’ll end up with “cold spots” where you’re warm under the lamp but freezing the second you step away. Your best bet? A few 800W units spread out. The speed vs. safety trade-off It’s tempting to just buy the most powerful lamp available. Sure, a 1000W unit feels like a warm hug the second you flip the switch. It’s fast. Really fast. But there’s a catch. High wattage means a bigger pull on your electrical system. If you load too many of these onto one circuit, you’re going to trip your breakers. It’s a pain to fix. Do yourself a favor and check what your wiring can actually handle before you go overboard. A few tips on installation The IPX5 housing keeps the guts of the machine safe, but where you put the lamp is what actually makes it work. Put them as high as possible on the ceiling. Heat rises, so you want that warmth pushing down on you, not getting trapped in the ceiling joists. And one last thing: keep the reflectors clean. It sounds trivial, but a layer of dust can actually kill your heat output by 10% or 15%. A quick wipe-down every now and then keeps things feeling cozy.
