
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (And Dry)
Putting infrared heaters in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got steam, splashes, and constant humidity. In that kind of environment, one tiny gap in your insulation and you’ve got a ground fault on your hands. Not great. To make sure everything stays safe, we lean heavily on the IP65 rating and a rock-solid seal between the lamp and the power.
Dealing with the Steam
An IP65 rating basically means the unit is dust-tight and can handle water jets. But here’s the thing: the real enemy isn’t just a stray splash of water. It’s the condensation. Steam loves to sneak into the housing and settle. If it gets into the electrical terminals, it creates a bridge for the electricity to jump where it shouldn’t. To stop that, we use silicone gaskets and sealed cable glands. We also keep the heating element tucked inside a sealed quartz envelope and use moisture-resistant potting compounds at the connection points. It’s all about keeping the water out.
Locking Down the Insulation
We use double-insulated cabling and reinforced ceramic holders to keep the current exactly where it belongs. The connection between the lamp and the circuit has to be air-tight. I always spec out high-temperature resins because they don’t crack when the heater cycles from cold to hot. If that resin cracks, the moisture wins. And for a final layer of protection? Always pair the system with an RCD or GFCI. If there’s even a tiny leak, it trips the power in a fraction of a second. Better safe than sorry.
The Catch with Sealed Designs
There is a trade-off here. Tight seals are amazing for safety, but they trap heat. Since an IP65 unit doesn’t have natural airflow, the internals get way hotter than they would in a garden heater. You have to make sure your housing materials can take that “heat soak” without warping. If the plastic or metal warps, your seals break. I recommend wiring everything with high-temp fluoropolymer cables. That way, the insulation doesn’t melt from the lamp’s own heat. Simple, but it saves you from a disaster.
